Happily Ever After (Earth Day 2022)
Do you know how many plastic bags that we use in America?
You might surprise by the number of single-use plastics bags that we have been using in the U.S.A each year. Yes, we use 100 billion single-use plastic bags per year, and the average number per person is 365 bags per year. It is a lot!!
The high consumption of plastic bags is causing a high number of petroleum fuels to produce as well. The manufacturing of getting material to produce plastic bag cause many environmental issues such as climate change, toxic air pollution, and water pollution.
Also, the waste that comes from plastic bags needs 1000 years to degrade, and it can generate to be microplastics which contaminate water, air, and living things. An example of the problem of plastic bags that affect nature is it causes the death of ocean creatures and disease in humans. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, 34% of leatherback sea turtles die because they ingest plastics. The appearance of floating plastic bags underwater looks like jellyfish, so it is hard for the sea turtle to separate between them. Also, fish eat thousands of tons of plastic bags a year, and it transfers to the food chain, which is very dangerous to humans and animals.
To save the environment and the living things, the Washington state adopted the statewide plastic bag ban, and it is effective on October 1st, 2021. The goal of this campaign is to reduce pollution in Washington’s recycling facilities, waterways, and roadways. The law prohibits single-use plastic carry-on bags. Then, they convince people to use reusable plastic bags or biodegrade bags instead.
However, Bai Tog Thai restaurants and the restaurants under the Bai Tong Thai group agree with this idea of saving the environment. We came up with the eco-friendly item, that is a reusable plastic tote bag, and provided it to our employees. Hence, our employees can use this tote bag instead of single-use plastic bags. In this way, we can help others save our community and our earth, and we will be Happily Ever After together!
